The best Vikings selection from each year of the 90s at the NFL Draft
By Adam Carlson
1991: Jake Reed, wide receiver – Round 3 (pick 68 overall)
Here is a name that should be recognizable to Minnesota Vikings fans. Jake Reed was part of an excellent passing offense for the team in the 90s while not being the focal point of opposing team’s defenses.
It’s a little hard to believe that Jake Reed fell as far as he did in the draft…and wasn’t the Vikings first pick in the third round. Minnesota instead picked linebacker Carlos Jenkins three picks earlier.
However, Minnesota found a great complement to Cris Carter when they drafted Reed. During his nine seasons with the Vikings, he compiled 413 catches for 6,433 yards and 33 touchdowns in 134 games played.
As of the start of the 2019 NFL season, Jake Reed sits in fourth place on the franchise’s all-time receiving yardage leaders, behind only teammates Cris Carter, Randy Moss, and Anthony Carter. That alone should prove just how explosive Minnesota’s passing game was in this era.
Honorable mention: Carlos Jenkins, LB – Michigan St. (Round 3)
