Receiving yards by a rookie tight end

Current Record: 447 (Joe Senser, 1980)

During their history, the Vikings have never really had a rookie tight end that made much of an impact. But Irv Smith Jr. has the opportunity to change that in 2019.

Selected in the second round by Minnesota in this year’s NFL Draft, Smith has the tools to put together the best campaign by a Vikings rookie tight end ever.

Aiding in his effort to put up some solid numbers in 2019 is the fact that the new offensive scheme Minnesota is currently installing is expected to feature a lot of two tight end sets. Meaning more time on the field and more opportunities to make plays for Smith in his rookie year.

At Alabama in 2018, the young Vikings tight end averaged 16.1 yards per catch. If Smith can put up anything close to that average in 2019, then he only needs to haul in around 30 balls to pass Sensor’s receiving yardage mark.

Smith is expected to get a bunch of playing time during his rookie season and if he is able to stay healthy for most of the year, then he shouldn’t have any trouble breaking Senser’s record.

Prediction: Smith sets a new record
