Who will be the Vikings’ fourth safety?

Training camp battles are a great way for fans to stay occupied in the mundane weeks of training camp and one of the most intriguing battles will happen in the secondary. While it’s unlikely that starters Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris will lose their spot to something other than an injury, the rest of the safety depth chart is in flux.

Reserve safety Jayron Kearse also seems to have a roster spot locked up, so it appears that the fourth safety spot is going to be a free for all between several players. As of now, fourth-year veteran Derron Smith will battle rookies Marcus Epps, Micah Abernathy and Isaiah Wharton for the spot with the possibility another spot will open up if the Vikings re-visit using Kearse as a linebacker.

As of now, it’s possible that Smith would have an inside track after a stand out performance with the AAF’s San Antonio Commanders, but it’s also hard to see if that will translate to the NFL. Otherwise, this is a battle that is sure to be wide open. With no cuts being made until the end of camp, this will be a battle that should have multiple twists and turns throughout the preseason.
