5 questions heading into the Vikings’ 2019 training camp
By Chris Schad
Is Laquon Treadwell on the way out?
Three years ago, fans of the Minnesota Vikings were almost popping champagne bottles at the arrival of Laquon Treadwell. As we enter training camp today, many are ready to usher him out the door and there’s a sense that the coaching staff may be starting to feel the same way.
Minnesota didn’t draft a wide receiver until the seventh-round, but both Dillon Mitchell and Olabisi Johnson were projected to go higher before the Vikings pulled the trigger. The receiver corps also has a couple of younger players projected to make a leap such as Chad Beebe and Brandon Zylstra, making the receiver room awfully crowded.
Even though Treadwell will be the first to tell you about his career year in 2018, it wasn’t a year acceptable of a former first-round pick. With the mistakes starting to pile up last season, the coaching staff made him a healthy scratch in favor of Beebe toward the end of the year and could spell the end despite the cap hit Minnesota would endure getting rid of him.
With Irv Smith Jr. also in the mix as an option as a big slot receiver, it’s possible that Treadwell’s days in Minnesota could be numbered.
