Predictions for every Vikings training camp battle in 2019
By Adam Patrick
Three-Technique Defensive Tackle
Participants: Shamar Stephen, Jalyn Holmes, Hercules Mata’afa, Armon Watts (R)
This is one of the battles that could develop into something very interesting depending on how things turn out for a few of the guys competing for the role.
Shamar Stephen figures to already be in the lead to land the job based on the contract he signed with the Vikings in the offseason (three-years, $12.45 million). But if Stephen goes down with an injury at some point this summer, it could result in someone else winning the role.
In his second year with Minnesota, Jalyn Holmes could be more of a factor in the team’s defense. Unlike 2018, Holmes has been healthy for the Vikings’ OTA and minicamp practices this year and this is something that should help with his development.
Hercules Mata’afa is the wild card in this battle. Coming off a torn ACL, the 2017 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year has bulked up from 250 pounds to 275 pounds since he joined Minnesota in 2018.
Prediction: Stephen wins the job
