Minnesota Vikings 53 man roster projection: Pre-training camp edition
By Adam Carlson
Special Teams (3)
One of the most confusing units the Minnesota Vikings is the specialists. It was expected that the team would bring in competition for nearly everyone in the unit, but instead, two of the three jobs are going unopposed.
Here are the players expected to make the roster from this positional grouping:
Bailey tied his career low in his first year with the Vikings, converting only 75 percent of his field goal attempts. It is a bit surprising that young competition wasn’t brought in by signing an undrafted free agent, but Bailey is the man with the leg this year.
Even more confusing is how no players were signed to compete with Wile. As a punter, he did great and is the franchise’s current leader in yards per punt at 45.2. However, his lack of experience as a holder likely caused the team some points during the season. Still, no other players were signed to compete, so it’s Wile’s chance to prove himself.
However, McDermott saw some competition come for his job in the draft. The team brought in Cutting, but whether or not he will be eligible to play for the next couple of seasons is still up in the air. For now, McDermott is a safe choice to return.
So, all three specialists from last year are back…but hopefully the results will be better now that they had last year.
Barely missed the cut: Austin Cutting
