Vikings Training Camp 2019: Previewing the wide receivers
By Chris Schad
The Rookies: Dillon Mitchell and Olabisi Johnson
The most intriguing part of the wide receiver battle will be between rookie receivers Dillon Mitchell and Olabisi Johnson. Both receivers have very little draft capital to their names as seventh-round picks, but both have some upside that will make them fun to watch in camp and when the preseason begins.
Johnson was a jack of all trades at Colorado State that could fill the void that Wright left behind last season. While he doesn’t possess any jaw-dropping traits, he’s simply a smart receiver that is at the right place at the right time. Johnson never topped 800 yards during his four years with the Rams but does have special teams experience which should give him a leg up toward the back end of the depth chart.
Mitchell may be the more exciting of the two prospects thanks to his level of production at Oregon. With potential 2020 first-round pick Justin Herbert tossing him the ball, Mitchell exploded for 75 catches, 1,184 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Ducks last fall. While he does need to add some size at 6-foot-1 and 197 pounds, his quickness helped MockDraftable compare him to Reggie Wayne.
Both rookies will be toward the bottom of the depth chart at the beginning of camp, but the wide receiver competition behind Diggs and Thielen is wide open, meaning that one or both could find their way onto the roster.
