Abdullah getting second-team reps

Behind Dalvin Cook, the fight to be the Vikings’ No. 2 running back is going to be one of the team’s most intense positional battles of this year’s training camp.

We got a glimpse into who might be potentially in the lead for the role during Friday’s practice and for now, it appears to be Ameer Abdullah as the veteran running back was seen taking a bunch of reps for Minnesota’s second-team offense on Friday.

Entering his second year with the Vikings, Abdullah has the most NFL experience of any other running back on the team’s current roster. Before joining Minnesota last season, he spent three and a half years with the Detroit Lions after they drafted him with a second-round pick in 2015.

Abdullah’s experience is likely what is giving him the edge for now, but he’s also a very talented player. He offers some of the same skill set that Cook provides out on the field and Abdullah is also a candidate to take over as Minnesota’s new kick returner this season.

The Vikings may have a plan to rotate some of their other running backs in with the second team over the next few days, so this will definitely be something to keep an eye on.
