6 takeaways from the first portion of Vikings training camp

Sloter has some work to do
Prior to the start of training camp, some people had Kyle Sloter pegged as the favorite to win the Vikings’ backup quarterback job this year. After a few practices at camp though, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
Sean Mannion has been getting the majority of the reps with the second-team offense in camp so far, while Sloter and undrafted rookie Jake Browning have been splitting snaps with the third-team offense.
Mannion has the most NFL experience of the three competing for the backup job this year, so it’s not a complete surprise that he seems to be the early favorite for the job. However, this could all change once Minnesota plays a few preseason games too.
Especially since Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer recently discussed how Sloter has typically performed much better in games than he has in practice.
So if Sloter is going to have a shot at the No. 2 quarterback job this year, he needs to make a good amount of plays during Minnesota’s upcoming preseason matchups.
