One-two punch leads the way

As for the ball-carrying backs, there are four who are deserving of a roster spot with the Vikings this year. The only locks as of now are Dalvin Cook and rookie Alexander Mattison.

Cook will be Minnesota’s starting back once the season opens up. His workload should be under close watch in his third year with the team, but his ceiling is remarkable.

If Cook can find a way to stay healthy, he can be one of the best complete backs in the league. His flashes in the run game and as a receiving threat provide hope.

The addition of Gary Kubiak to the Vikings’ coaching staff should also bring out the best in all of the running backs this season.

Given that Minnesota used a third-round draft pick on Mattison this year, he will likely be the primary backup to Cook. He saw plenty of early reps against the Saints. He also registered a receiving touchdown down near the goal-line.
