Offensive MVP – Honorable Mentions

While there can only be one offensive MVP from Week 2 of the preseason, there were plenty of players who did a lot to increase their value or put themselves in a better position to make a roster spot. Let’s take a look at some of those individuals:

  • Mike Boone, running back – Boone followed up another strong preseason performance by showing off his ability in the receiving game. He caught one pass for a nice 45 yard gain to go with 66 yards on 21 carries. 111 yards of offense made him one of the top choices for MVP.
  • Brandon Zylstra, wide receiver – When you get five passes thrown your way and you haul them all in, that makes for a good day…and when one of them is for a touchdown, it’s even better. He gained 37 yards for Minnesota during the game, which is nice after a quiet first preseason game.
  • Alexander Mattison, running back – It’s nice seeing two running backs on this list after the struggles from the position last year. Mattison took another starting opportunity and ran with it, gaining 41 yards on ten carries and could have gained more yards if Cousins could have hit him on a screen. The potential is there.
  • Irv Smith Jr, tight end – Like Zylstra, he caught all five passes thrown his way. Plus, one of those passes was a touchdown that saw him break out a celebratory dance. So far, it’s nice that we’ve seen a little from Smith, but this is likely just the tip of the iceberg from the young man.
