Who will take the third running back spot?

Just like last week, the other part of the Viking offense to watch is in the backfield. We learned last week that Dalvin Cook is still good when he’s healthy and that Alexander Mattison will be the backup unless he goes down in Buffalo. That leaves Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah to battle for the third and final roster spot.

Entering Buffalo, Boone has the lead in the sense of being a pure running back. The second-year back out of Cincinnati has racked up 177 yards this preseason and has toted the rock at a 5.1 yards per carry clip over the previous three games. With an added ability as a receiver, Boone could be more of a similar option to Cook, should he go down throughout the season.

Boones’ main competition is Abdullah, who was kind of a surprise to be back on the roster in the first place. Abdullah hasn’t had the same success as Boone including losing a fumble in New Orleans in the first preseason game but may have an advantage thanks to his ability as a kick returner.

For both men, Thursday’s game is a huge chance to prove they should make the roster and if Abdullah shines on special teams, there’s even a chance that both could make the cut.
