Did the Vikings do enough to provide depth at receiver?

As the Vikings entered this past offseason, upgrading the weapons surrounding Kirk Cousins had to be a priority.

In some ways, Minnesota succeeded by beefing up the offensive line and drafting an exciting option at tight end in Irv Smith Jr. On the other end of things, their efforts to improve their wide receiver unit proved to be underwhelming.

The Vikings’ lone acquisition in free agency at the receiver position was Jordan Taylor, who was cut prior to the team’s final preseason game with the Buffalo Bills. In the draft, Minnesota passed multiple times on selecting a wide receiver until the seventh round when they added Bisi Johnson and Dillon Mitchell.

Mitchell wound up on the Vikings’ practice squad while incumbent receivers Brandon Zylstra and Laquon Treadwell were also cut. Minnesota is currently carrying just four receivers on the roster and behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, there isn’t much to be excited about.

A couple of things could be in the works here as the Vikings could sign a wide receiver prior to this week’s season-opener against the Atlanta Falcons or they could use Smith more as a receiver as opposed to a traditional tight end.

Either way, someone needs to step up or else Minnesota’s offense may suffer the same fate as it did a year ago.
