Alexander Mattison – RB

The Vikings’ run game has been complete fire this season and it isn’t just because of Dalvin Cook. Rookie Alexander Mattison has been very impressive and surprising in his own right.

A lot of people in the media, myself included, were not very familiar with Mattison and were shocked when Minnesota drafted him with the last pick of the third round this year. Many thought the Vikings could’ve landed the former Boise State running back a few rounds later, but now that pick is looking like a steal instead of a reach.

Mattison has been very impressive with how hard he runs. He gets a full head of steam quickly and he hits the hole with reckless abandon. He has good top-end speed, good vision, and impressive lateral quickness.

He’s proven he can be an effective back at the NFL level and if Cook goes down with an injury, the Vikings can rest easy knowing they have this talented backup waiting in the wings.

Mattison has had his fair share of touches every game so far this season. He’s racked up 252 yards on 48 carries with one touchdown. He has also recorded one reception that went for eight yards.

Minnesota is committed to running the football this year, so Mattison will get his opportunities as he spells Cook and the yards will continue to accumulate for this surprising young back.
