Minnesota’s corners are in a funk

During the majority of Mike Zimmer’s tenure with the Vikings, the team’s cornerbacks have typically been one of the strongest elements of the defense. However, Minnesota’s corners have struggled more than usual this season.

The Lions must have realized this during their preparations before Sunday because they had no hesitations when it came to throwing at Xavier Rhodes or Trae Waynes.

Detroit’s chances paid off for them as Marvin Jones Jr. ended up hauling in a total of four touchdowns against the Vikings. Rhodes was tasked with covering Jones for two of these scores, while Waynes and Mike Hughes were covering the Lions receiver on his other two trips to the end zone.

Overall, Minnesota’s secondary has been playing pretty well this season. But their two starting corners, Rhodes and Waynes, have not been living up to the expectations that come with being at the top of the depth chart.

Giving up four touchdowns to one opposing receiver didn’t end up costing the Vikings a win on Sunday. But it’s certainly not something that cannot continue for Minnesota for the rest of the year.
