Defense comes up big in the red zone

For a team that has averaged less than seven points per game in the last four weeks, the Redskins’ offense didn’t have much trouble moving the ball against the Vikings during the first half on Thursday.

On two of their first three drives against Minnesota’s defense, Washington was able to get within five yards of the end zone. However, that’s when the difficulty level picked up for the Redskins and their offense.

In both of Washington’s trips to the red zone on Thursday, the Vikings were able to hold them to a field goal. In what ended up being a close game, the performance by Minnesota’s defense inside their own 20-yard line turned out to be a big factor in the team coming out with a win over the Redskins.

Heading into Thursday, the Vikings’ red zone defense ranked 20th in the NFL. It’s definitely one area Minnesota needs to continue working on this season, but they certainly showed signs of improvement on Thursday against Washington.
