Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes was riding in the car with Jayron Kearse last Sunday when the safety was arrested for DWI and possession of a firearm without a permit.
Like any NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings hope they don’t see any of their players in the headlines for the wrong reasons when their guys have a little extra time off during the middle of the season.
Unfortunately for the Vikings, they had to wake up last Sunday morning to the news of safety Jayron Kearse being arrested. Kearse was pulled over and eventually arrested for suspicion of 4th Degree DWI and possession of a firearm without a permit.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that the current Minnesota safety and special teams captain has officially been charged with five misdemeanors including carrying a pistol without a permit and careless driving.
Another interesting detail that came out on Tuesday regarding the incident was that there was another Vikings player riding with Kearse when he was pulled over. According to a report by the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson, Minnesota cornerback Mike Hughes was one of two passengers riding with Kearse at the time of his arrest.
Tomasson also revealed that Hughes was so intoxicated at the time of the incident that he was, “throwing up outside of the vehicle.”
The Vikings cornerback is not being charged with any crimes and there is nothing wrong with him going out and having some drinks on a day off. But Minnesota is likely disappointed that Hughes got in the car with a driver who had also been drinking.
Both Kearse and Hughes are lucky that they didn’t end up causing harm to themselves or someone else with their bad decision making last Sunday.
After the incident, Kearse expressed remorse for everything that went down and he made sure to emphasize that the events that took place last Sunday morning were, “not a reflection,” of the type of person he is.
As of Wednesday morning, the status of the Vikings safety for the team’s Week 9 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs remains unknown.
