Can Kirk Cousins be trusted on the road vs. Cowboys?
By John Buhler
Coming off a tough loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, can we trust Kirk Cousins to step up when the Minnesota Vikings face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10?
The Minnesota Vikings are coming off a tough third loss of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9. Minnesota battled against a strong Kansas City team but came up short thanks to a field goal as time expired off the leg of Harrison Butker. Minnesota won’t have it easy this week either, as the Vikings have to play the Dallas Cowboys on the road on Sunday Night Football.
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former Vikings offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at the tough spot the Vikings find themselves in this week and see if quarterback Kirk Cousins will have what it takes to deliver Minnesota a much-needed victory in primetime (39:56).
“We know that Cousins does not beat teams on the road with winning records,” said Schwartz. “He’s rarely done that in his career. He goes back on the road against a team with a winning record. I don’t trust the Vikings in this situation at all. Give me the Cowboys here.”
“Cousins just scares the hell of me in these spots,” said Verderame. “Going into that Chiefs game last week, I thought the Vikings would win if Moore played. Moore actually played very well to his credit, but…he was the better quarterback in that game. So to me, I gotta take Dallas. If this game was in Minnesota, I’d feel a little differently, but I think [Dak] Prescott outplays Cousins.”
So it doesn’t seem like Schwartz or Verderame have any faith in Cousins to get it done in primetime vs. the Cowboys. Not beating Moore on the road is not a good sign that Cousins will outplay Dallas starter Dak Prescott, who many see as a comparable NFC quarterback to Cousins in the league-wide pantheon. This is a big spot for the Vikings and Cousins has to show up.
But if he does not, that could mean the Vikings lose ground in the tight NFC North race with the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay played terribly last week vs. the Los Angeles Chargers but should bounce back against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. If Minnesota wants to win this division, the Vikings have to find a way to beat a good team in Dallas on the road Sunday night.
