Defensive MVP – Jayron Kearse, safety

Fans watching this game noticed a lot from Jayron Kearse, who took on a bigger role than he likely expected he would. He was brought in to play a hybrid safety/linebacker role and be a nickel back in coverage.

His role expanded in a big way when Harrison Smith exited the contest with a hamstring issue and did not return. Kearse and Sendejo held down the fort for the remainder of the game quite well despite both being backups.

Kearse alone had a couple of key pass breakups while defending the ultra-talented tight end Noah Fant and the 6’4 Tim Patrick, one of those coming at the end of that game that could have spelled doom for the Vikings’ chance of victory.

Ending the game with five tackles (four solo), Kearse proved that if something happens and one of the starting safeties have to exit that he can fill in for almost any role in the backfield for the Vikings. And his efforts in this game were a big reason Minnesota was able to complete their comeback.
