Zimmer has earned another extension from Minnesota

With the Vikings win over the Lions on Sunday, the team clinched their fourth winning season in the last five years. Since Mike Zimmer was hired in 2014, Minnesota has only had one season in which they finished with a losing record.

Sunday’s result also puts Zimmer in a group with Dennis Green, Jerry Burns, and Bud Grant as the only head coaches in Vikings history to lead the team to at least four winning campaigns during their tenure.

Like him or not, Zimmer has put Minnesota in a position to come away with a victory more often than not during their games with him calling the shots.

With another winning season added to his resume, the current Vikings head coach deserves to be given another extension from the team in 2020. His current deal is set to expire in 2021, but Zimmer has proven enough this season to have a few more years tacked on to his current contract with Minnesota.

Some out there would like the Vikings to move on from their current coach regardless of how the rest of the 2019 season turns out. But is Minnesota going to be able to find someone who can put the team in a position to succeed each and every week like Zimmer has during his tenure?

A new head coach is hardly ever a guarantee for immediate improvement. Of the seven teams who switched head coaches during the most recent offseason, only one of them currently has a winning record (Packers).

Zimmer’s future with the Vikings was a little murky after the team failed to make the playoffs last year. But he’s got Minnesota back heading towards the postseason this year and he should be rewarded for his efforts whenever the team’s current season comes to an end.
