Minnesota Vikings 2010s All-Decade Team: Who made the cut?
By Chris Schad
Head Coach
Mike Zimmer
With many of these positions, there isn’t too much of a debate. For the head coach, the end of the Brad Childress era came with a thud in 2010 and was replaced by the laid back approach of Leslie Frazier, which produced the league’s worst defense. With the Vikings looking for a shift in attitude, the Vikings hired Mike Zimmer in 2014 and haven’t needed to look for another head coach since.
Zimmer had been turned down at numerous stops along the way, but his arrival in Minnesota proved to be exactly what the team needed moving forward. In six seasons with the Vikings, Zimmer has posted a 57-37-1 record and turned the defense into a perennial top-five unit.
If there are complaints about Zimmer’s stint, it’s that the Vikings haven’t shown consistency from a year-to-year or even a game-to-game basis. That’s produced a 1-2 playoff record that was stung on Blair Walsh‘s miss against Seattle in 2015, but also benefitted in the Minneapolis Miracle in 2017.
At 63 years old, there’s no telling how much longer he will coach, but as far as the past decade is concerned, Zimmer deserves to lead this team.
