San Francisco can’t stop both Diggs and Thielen

This season, the 49ers got a great performance out of their top cornerback, Richard Sherman. The former Seattle Seahawks corner was voted to the Pro Bowl this year after finishing with 11 pass breakups, three interceptions, and a 62.3 allowed completion percentage.

On Saturday, Sherman will likely be tasked with trying to shut down either Stefon Diggs or Adam Thielen. But who will San Francisco use to cover the other half of the Vikings’ dynamic receiving duo?

Ahkello Witherspoon is expected to get the nod as the 49ers’ other starting corner and this decision could end up working out in Minnesota’s favor.

Witherspoon was benched during San Francisco’s Week 17 win over the Seattle Seahawks for what he described as an, “average,” performance. In 10 games this season, he gave up a total of six touchdowns to his coverage and opposing quarterbacks had a 107.3 rating when throwing in his direction.

So whether it’s Diggs or Thielen who is being covered by Witherspoon on Saturday, it seems like they’ll have a good opportunity to put up some impressive numbers and help improve the Vikings’ chances for a win.
