Time is no longer in Zimmer’s favor

During Mike Zimmer’s tenure as the Vikings head coach, he’s been able to do a lot of good things for the franchise. Zimmer has led Minnesota to the playoffs in three of the last five seasons, he helped turn around a terrible defense, and he managed to keep the team on the right track no matter how many crazy obstacles seemed to come their way.

While he’s been able to do a lot of good during his six seasons, he still hasn’t delivered on the ultimate goal that he promised he would when he was hired. Six years after he became the head coach of the Vikings, the team still has just many Vince Lombardi trophies as they did before he arrived; zero.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Minnesota extended Zimmer’s contract this offseason, especially since he only has one year remaining on his current deal. But it would be foolish to think that his time to bring a Super Bowl to the Vikings isn’t dwindling.

Minnesota has to show some serious progress in 2020 that likely includes an NFC Championship appearance because just making the playoffs might no longer be good enough for the Vikings’ owners to keep Zimmer around after next season.
