Vikings will select a corner in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft

When it comes to this year’s NFL Draft class, Mike Zimmer is going to feel like he just walked into Costco when he gets a look at this year’s cornerback crop. The infusion of youth coming into the league is going to be mouth-watering for Zimmer, who craves big, fast cornerbacks that can keep up with the speedier receivers who are currently taking over the league.

Last year, Zimmer didn’t have too much to be proud of in that regard. Xavier Rhodes was a disaster on the outside and Trae Waynes is an impending free agent after allowing five touchdowns. Mike Hughes also struggled while coming back from a multi-ligament knee injury and the Vikings also have a decision to make with slot corner Mackensie Alexander who will be hitting free agency like Waynes.

This means Minnesota going to hit the cornerbacks hard in the upcoming draft and it’s a great bet that they will take one with their first-round pick. While it’s hard to see the Vikings trading up for Ohio State’s Jeffrey Okudah, they could keep things in the family by selecting Alabama’s Trevon Diggs, who is the brother of Stefon Diggs. Other names that may fit include Florida’s C.J. Henderson, LSU’s Kristian Fulton and Clemson’s A.J. Terrell.

Zimmer’s drafting of corners in the first round has become a meme of sorts, but in order to revive the defense, Minnesota will have to address it early (and perhaps often) in this year’s draft.
