5 offensive prospects for Vikings to watch at the East-West Shrine Bowl
By Nik Edlund
Tyler Huntley – QB (Utah)
At this point, the Vikings are more likely to extend Kirk Cousins than to use a high draft pick on a new quarterback this year.
There is always the chance that something unexpected happens and an intriguing prospect ends up falling to them, but Minnesota’s plan should be to draft a quarterback late that they can slowly groom to be the backup and maybe even be the eventual replacement for Cousins. Tyler Huntley would be a nice pick for the Vikings and he has loads of upside.
Huntley is a well put together 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. He can make plays with his legs and he ran plenty of zone reads during his time in Utah.
His accuracy is a little hit or miss, especially on deep throws, but he puts plenty of zip on the football and he can fit it into tight spaces. Another issue Huntley needs to improve upon is his overall processing. He tends to look for his first option and he doesn’t always allow time for a play to develop.
These are all things that can be improved with proper coaching. What can’t be taught is the fight and determination Huntley shows in games. He is a gamer who gives it his all on every single play and he fires up his teammates with his determination and grit.
Huntley will probably be drafted some time on Day 3 and is a guy who the Vikings could bring along slowly. He’s got loads more potential than the average Day 3 choice and he could develop into a starter in this league if he can work out just a couple of issues.
