Extend Zimmer and Spielman

For the third time in five seasons, the Vikings earned a spot in the playoffs. This likely wouldn’t have been possible without the work of Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman.

With Zimmer and Spielman leading the charge, the Vikings have been in position to contend with the best teams in the league for the last handful of seasons.

Unfortunately, their work hasn’t resulted in a Super Bowl win for Minnesota yet. But this regime is closer to getting the franchise to the top than the majority who came before them during the last 20 years.

Unless the Vikings’ owners plan to blow everything up and have the team start from scratch, there is no reason to not extend the contracts of both Zimmer and Spielman this offseason. Both were given one-year extensions in 2019 and they built a team that was able to get back to the playoffs.

Now Zimmer and Spielman are both in the same position they were last year at this time with only one year remaining on their current contracts. They both deserve to have their time with the Vikings extended and that’s exactly what the team’s ownership should do this offseason so that they can get back to working on building a contender.
