Figure out if Cousins is the long-term quarterback

Two years ago, the Vikings made the decision to go after the top free-agent quarterback on the market in Kirk Cousins. Minnesota was coming off a season that ended in the NFC Championship and they felt that Cousins was potentially the piece that could get the franchise over the hump and into the Super Bowl.

Two seasons later, Cousins has led the Vikings to just one playoff appearance and it didn’t end with the team getting anywhere near a spot in the Super Bowl.

Cousins’ current deal with Minnesota only has one year remaining on it. So during the next few months, the Vikings will have to decide if they want to offer him an extension and continue their relationship or let the quarterback play out the rest of his contract and see where everyone stands at the end of next season.

For someone like Mike Zimmer, who spent his first few years in Minnesota with a different starting quarterback starting under center every season, extending Cousins might be the best solution if the team is looking for some continuity at the position.

But if Zimmer and the Vikings’ front office don’t think the veteran signal-caller is worth keeping around past 2020, the team could look to make a move in the upcoming NFL Draft to land a young quarterback in the first or second round.

Cousins is coming off of arguably his most efficient season of his career in the league and he put up good numbers in 2018 as well. So it’s not like he’s been terrible during his tenure in the Twin Cities.

Minnesota just has to sit down this offseason and figure out if “not terrible” is going to be good enough to help them accomplish their championship goals.
