New England Patriots

The Patriots could be in the market for a safety this offseason as current starters Patrick Chung and Devin McCourty are both 32-years-old. There isn’t anyone very promising backing them up and signing a free agent who could come in at a decent price like Jayron Kearse, would be a smart move for New England.

Kearse would be a great signing for the Patriots for many reasons. One, they value special teams. New England has had one of the all-time great special teamers in Matthew Slater on their team for what seems like forever.

They’d improve that unit, even more, by bringing in Kearse who has excelled on special teams during his NFL career. He is a fantastic gunner who can get down the field in a hurry and destroy return men.

Bill Belichick is also a coach who would utilize the versatility of Kearse. As we mentioned earlier, Kearse can play both safety positions, slot corner, and even some linebacker. Belichick is a very creative defensive mind and finds ways to get the 11 best players on the field in all situations.

Seeing him line Kearse up at linebacker one play, then moving him to corner, and later safety, all in the same game, would be a very Belichick-like move. It would also give opposing offenses headaches trying to figure out where Kearse is on the field at all times.

The Patriots are also a team that wouldn’t be scared off by Kearse’s off-field issues from earlier this season. They’ve rolled the dice on plenty of players with character flags before and more times than not, it works out in their favor due to their strong culture and commitment to winning.
