Ashtyn Davis – S (California)
Harrison Smith is not getting any younger and Anthony Harris’ future in purple is uncertain given his upcoming entrance into free agency. So the Vikings might explore the possibility of taking a flyer on a developmental prospect like Ashtyn Davis that they can put behind two stud players operating in the secondary.
Davis is going to show up incredibly well during the evaluation process given his exceptional athleticism and it could result in him rapidly moving up teams’ draft boards.
His track speed is a standout feature of his overall play on the field, but he does need to brush up certain aspects of his game before making the step up to the NFL level.
The safety’s tackling is a definite concern and his strength is something else that warrants considerable improvement if he is going to be a success at the next level.
Davis had a good final year at Cal, recording 55 tackles, two interceptions, four passes defended, and a forced fumble. But his lack of physicality saw him get exposed on a number of occasions that will draw concerns for anyone watching tape with a thought of taking him anywhere after round two.
If the Vikings are able to take a chance with Davis, he will probably not be able to make an immediate impact from a starting spot. But having him sit behind two premier talents such as Smith and Harris, bringing him in on a rotational basis, would do wonders for his overall development and his chances of forming a successful NFL career.
