New England Patriots

Whether star quarterback Tom Brady stays in New England for next season or not, it is clear that whoever is throwing the ball needs significant help after a disappointing year from the team’s wide receiver group.

The inability of the Patriots’ receivers to make customary big plays and move the ball downfield played a leading role in the team’s demise during the 2019 season. Ultimately, it cost them another lengthy playoff run and a shock home loss in the wild-card round at the hands of the Tennessee Titans.

This is something that New England head coach Bill Belichick is likely going to address this offseason, whether it be in free agency, the NFL Draft, or looking at a possible trade option. The third option could see Stefon Diggs become someone of great interest for them should he fit in with their plans.

Diggs represents a considerable upgrade on what the Patriots already have. His explosiveness down the field would allow Julian Edelman more space in the slot and take the heat of N’Keal Harry.

Any potential move for Diggs is likely to be costly to complete and giving up a bunch of assets is not something that New England is known for.

They typically like to try and find the diamond in the rough or take a chance on someone with a checkered past who is available on the cheap in the hope of reigniting their career. So giving up so much for someone like Diggs would be uncharacteristic for the Patriots, even if he is something they desperately need.

If Brady does end up returning to New England for one last dance in 2020, then the need to win now and put the right pieces around him for instant success becomes even more essential. It would also make trading for Diggs a much more enticing option.
