The Adam Thielen effect

Any trade involving Stefon Diggs could have serious implications on the overall influence of fellow Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen.

Thielen has enjoyed a tremendous career in Minnesota. But he has always had the security blanket of Diggs playing alongside him. Should that change before next season, then Thielen could have his work cut out for him when it comes to producing with increased attention from opposing defenses.

Even though opposing teams will still load the box to prevent Vikings running back Dalvin Cook from opening them up, they could still double Thielen more frequently since they would no longer have to worry about Diggs on the other side.

Thielen also struggled with injuries last season and another spell on the sidelines would be a disaster for Minnesota if they part ways with Diggs this year. The duo is widely regarded as one of the best receiving tandems in the NFL and it would be prudent for the Vikings to keep both around while they are both firing on all cylinders.

There’s little doubt Thielen can still put up good numbers in any Diggs absence. But Thielen does not stretch the field like his counterpart, which takes away a significant play-action threat for Minnesota’s offense.

The tandem has developed a strong chemistry off the field, which has played a big role in their overall achievements over the years. Any decision to trade away Diggs could be met with confusion and possible anger from Thielen that has the potential to affect his play.

Dealing Diggs is a powder keg situation on so many levels. Especially when it comes to the impact it may have on a player in Thielen who has a 2020 salary cap hit of almost $12.8 million.
