Pressure on Zimmer and Spielman

The heat on head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman is going to be immense in 2020 if they decide to trade Stefon Diggs this offseason.

Both are currently heading into the final year of their respective deals and they might need a strong showing this offseason and when competitive action begins in order to secure new contracts.

Trading Diggs is something they are going to have to spend considerable time pondering if they receive a good offer. Judging by the recent speculation, there is no shortage of suitors for one of the most prominent wide receivers in the NFL.

They are going to have to live with their decision and explain their thought process to a Vikings fan base that could see the move as a distinct lack of ambition. Contingency plans will need to be made via free agency or the NFL Draft if they opt to move on from a player like Diggs.

A mystery $200,000 fine last season only added fuel to the fire in terms of Diggs’ happiness and overall attitude towards the franchise. Zimmer and Spielman may come to the conclusion that the receiver isn’t worth the trouble anymore and go for a more high-character individual in his place.

New offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will also probably have a huge say during the thought process of possibly dealing Diggs. Kubiak did not take the job on the premise that he would lose his main deep-field threat and that will also need to be considered before a final decision is made.

The next few weeks are going to be pivotal for Zimmer and Spielman’s long and short-term future with the organization and the Diggs dilemma may be the most crucial decision of all.
