6 free-agent cornerbacks the Vikings could sign in 2020
By Nik Edlund
Jason Verrett
Jason Verrett was a first-round pick of the then, San Diego Chargers in the 2014 NFL Draft. While not being the biggest corner in the draft that year, he was known for his sticky coverage, playmaking ability, overall speed, and his willingness to make a tackle.
He earned the slot corner job for the Chargers that year and was on the field in the team’s season opener. Verrett then started being plagued by the issue that would define his career so far; injuries.
Verrett hasn’t been able to reach the potential he showed in college during his time in the NFL primarily because he just hasn’t been healthy. He has a long list of injuries that have kept him off the field for large portions of seasons.
During his time in the league, he’s dealt with a hamstring sprain, shoulder injury, foot injury, groin pull, another hamstring pull, torn ACL, knee tear, shoulder labrum tear, and a pedal Achilles tear. This guy is a walking infirmary.
While these past injuries definitely up the risk factor in bringing Verrett in, it also lowers his asking price. He’d be a gamble, but if the Vikings rolled the dice on him and were able to sign him to a team-friendly deal loaded with incentives, the risk could pay off. If Verrett stays healthy he’s got the ability to be a quality starting corner for Minnesota in 2020.
