Cornerback

There are multiple cornerback positions that could be up for grabs for the Vikings in 2020 as both starters, Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes, could be gone.

Waynes is a free agent this year, so he could be looking to get paid by a team that can actually afford him. Rhodes may be sent packing this offseason because he was god awful in 2019 and he isn’t worth anything near what Minnesota is due to pay him next season.

If these two depart this year, Mike Hughes and Holton Hill are the next men up. Hughes struggled a season ago and he appears to be injury-prone. Hill is one bad decision away from a year-long suspension and he can’t be counted on to be present for all 16 games in 2020.

The Vikings current slot corner, Mackensie Alexander, is also a free agent this year and he will likely look to get a big chunk of cheddar from a team other than the Vikings.

So potentially, there could be three jobs up for grabs in Minnesota’s secondary this offseason. The Vikings might have to find new players for both starting cornerback spots and their slot corner position.

It is possible that Hughes and Hill become Minnesota’s new starting cornerbacks for next season. But there’s a strong chance a high draft pick or a free agent joins the fray for one of these jobs this year too.

The same goes for the Vikings’ slot corner role as Kris Boyd will probably be in the mix for this job with young guys like Nate Meadors and probably another rookie.

This will be a fun situation to watch during Minnesota’s training camp this summer. What happens in free agency and this year’s draft should also give us a better idea of who the front runners might be for these potential vacancies in the secondary.
