Trade Diggs for a top-five pick
There has been plenty of talk about the future of wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the Twin Cities this offseason. Cryptic tweets from the player and Minnesota’s desire to move big earners that are contributing to their salary cap restrictions only added fuel to the fire.
Trading Diggs might not be the wisest move given his high level of play on the field, but it is a move that might give the Vikings a better chance of taking Tua Tagovailoa in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
A team like the New York Giants, who has the fourth overall pick this year, might be a willing trade partner. There is no telling what the Giants offense would be like with Diggs, Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and Evan Engram going forward.
Whether they would be willing to part with their No. 4 selection in 2020 and possibly other assets remains to be seen. New York does have serious deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball and they may decide to keep the receivers they have and improve their secondary with someone like former Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah.
Another stumbling block for Minnesota is that they still might not get the chance to draft Tagovailoa even if they acquire the fourth overall pick from the Giants. The Detroit Lions currently have the No. 3 selection and they will not want the Vikings to get their hands on a player that could do their playoff and NFC North title chances serious harm for the next decade.
Trading away Diggs has its pros and cons, but it would take away Minnesota’s best downfield threat that would hamper current gunslinger Kirk Cousins and his possible heir apparent in Tagovailoa. It represents a significant risk, but one the Vikings might be willing to take.
