What’s next for Griffen?
Everson Griffen is in a privileged position this offseason. Not many veterans his age enter free agency on a high with the NFL world as their oyster.
The Vikings would be better with Griffen on the roster. But he does not owe them anything after a decade of service. If he leaves Minnesota, it will be for the right reasons and probably not because of the financial package offered by a franchise wishing to acquire his services.
It is a huge decision for Griffen to make and one that is going to take some time. Does he stay in a familiar surrounding with the Vikings if they offer him a new deal? Or will he take his chances at a Super Bowl elsewhere?
One thing for sure is that Griffen has earned this right both by his production and his overall journey. To come back from adversity the way he did in 2019 and to still play at an elite level is a testament to his overall character and the support he received from the organization.
This should definitely count for something during any impending contract talks, but playing for a prolific contender may be just as attractive at this stage of Griffen’s career.
If Griffen does move on from Minnesota, his legacy with the team has already been cemented. He has been the heartbeat of all that is good within the franchise for a significant period of time and he deserves all the praises and attention coming his way in the next few weeks.
What comes next is entirely up to Griffen and he deserves this opportunity.
