Assessing the value of C.J. Ham heading into free agency
By Dean Jones
Will Ham command interest?
What interest C.J. Ham generates on the market will be entirely dependent on the offensive system of a potential suitor.
It will have to be similar to the run-first offense implemented by the Vikings last season. To get the best out of Ham, he must be used often and have the right scheme around him to enable a noteworthy contribution.
The fullback position is something that some teams in the NFL do not operate with at all these days. The game has changed vastly from the old halfback sets that teams would rather use the extra roster spot on a wide receiver or tight end to give them more of a passing threat.
For a prolific running team such as the Baltimore Ravens, then someone like Ham makes a lot of sense. Putting the fullback alongside MVP Lamar Jackson and Mark Ingram could take their exceptional running game to even greater heights, although this is not a route they went down last season.
There should be some interest from other teams for one of the best at the position, but the problem Ham has is that is it not a high priority for any team with other additional needs. This means that he might have to wait a while until other priorities are finalized.
This could be good news for Minnesota, who also have significant needs elsewhere with little salary cap room to work with.
