Sixth Round (Pick No. 186)

Stanford Samuels – CB (Florida State)

As previously mentioned, odds are high that the Vikings will trade down to get another pick in the fifth or even early in the sixth round. However, we’re here in the sixth round and Mike Zimmer still doesn’t have his cornerback, so Minnesota settles on Stanford Samuels as a developmental prospect with some upside.

Samuels has some work to do in terms of refining his footwork and becoming more of a complete cornerback. But this is where a defensive back guru like Zimmer should make his money.

Samuels showed signs of putting things together at Florida State, including elite ball-hawking skills with eight interceptions in three years as a starter.

As with any FSU prospect, the turmoil that surrounded the program should be taken into consideration when considering their development. To get a prospect like Samuels, who stands at 6-foot-2 in the sixth round would be a big win for the Vikings and it would provide depth to a suddenly thin cornerback group.
