How can the Vikings acquire Williams?

It might seem like a long shot, but if the Vikings want to enhance their chances of making a Super Bowl run in 2020, then trading for Trent Williams is an avenue worth exploring.

This is a window that is rapidly closing for Minnesota’s current roster. They have all the tools needed on offense to succeed right now and Williams would be the icing on the cake.

If the Vikings can leave some wiggle room to improve the defense, then who knows how far they can go next season. The Redskins will want a first-round pick and maybe other pieces for a player like Williams who has been ultra-consistent throughout his career.

An ideal situation for the Vikings’ is if they can get Washington to take on Riley Reiff’s contract as part of any deal. Reiff has two years left on his current deal and he would not represent that much of a financial commitment from either side if he was part of the deal.

Minnesota will not want to part with too much draft capital with so many secondary issues they need to fill on the cheap. Perhaps offering this year’s first-round selection, coupled with second and fifth-round picks in 2021 on the guarantee they take on Reiff’s salary would be an intriguing offer for the Redskins.

Williams is unlikely to be short of offers and it remains to be seen whether the Vikings are willing to gamble a part of their future to win in the present.
