Cousins and the closing window

How the Vikings perform in 2020 will go a long way to shaping the long-term ambitions of the franchise.

Even though some key names look likely to depart Minnesota this offseason, they still have a roster that can boast some formidable offensive weapons. If the defense holds up, especially against NFC North rivals, then the Vikings have a good chance of making the playoffs for a second straight year.

If things fall off and they are unable to reach the postseason, then Minnesota may choose to begin a rebuilding process. This would put a new Kirk Cousins contract in serious jeopardy and a disappointing season could see him become the latest Vikings quarterback to be shown the door.

Minnesota committed a lot of money to Cousins in the hope of him delivering a championship, something he has not yet been able to do. Another failed attempt in 2020 and it would probably be better for the Vikings to invest his astronomical salary elsewhere.

One would predict this current window for success is rapidly closing for Minnesota. Mike Zimmer will be aware of this more than most, which is why it is crucial the team does not further inflict long-term damage on their chances by giving Cousins an extension.

If the Vikings finish with an 8-8 record or worse next season, then the Cousins decision will be made for them. They have a lot of talent from an offensive standpoint and if they were to underachieve again, it might be the trigger to blow everything up and start over next year.
