According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer on Monday, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback is still drawing interest from the San Francisco 49ers.

Before Kirk Cousins decided to sign with the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 offseason, there were a number of teams who were believed to have an interest in landing the quarterback.

One of these teams was the San Francisco 49ers. However, the 49ers decided to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo during the middle of the 2017 season instead of waiting for Cousins to hit free agency in 2018.

San Francisco’s interest in the current Vikings quarterback apparently hasn’t disappeared though. Cousins is currently scheduled to become a free agent again in 2021 and the 49ers could be a potential landing spot for the veteran signal-caller.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer on Monday, a number of people around the NFL believe the pressure will be on Garoppolo next season to lead San Francisco to success and if he doesn’t, then the team could turn to Cousins in 2021.

Breer also mentioned that if Cousins believes there’s a chance to sign with the 49ers in 2021, then it might be best for him to not agree to an extension with Minnesota this offseason.

Much of this seems to be speculation by Breer, but it also has some realistic aspects mixed in. Current San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan has worked with Cousins in the past and he’s expressed his desire to reunite with the quarterback one day.

Of course, all of this speculation will disappear if the Vikings are able to get Cousins to sign an extension during the next few months. And if he chooses to play out the rest of his current deal instead, then the chances of him leaving for San Francisco in 2021 might actually be real.
