Minnesota’s quarterback situation
The Vikings have some huge decisions to make in the coming weeks, meaning a possible extension for Kirk Cousins may have to wait.
There are plenty of doubters that remain when it comes to the former Michigan State quarterback after a very impressive season. Even though his limitations are obvious, Cousins guided Minnesota back to the playoffs in 2019 and helped lead them to a landmark victory over the New Orleans Saints before eventually falling short to the San Francisco 49ers.
Cousins has one year left on his fully-guaranteed, $84 million contract and he counts a whopping $31 million against the Vikings’ salary cap in 2020. How he performs when competitive action begins next season could be what determines whether Minnesota will offer him a new lengthy deal.
Spotrac projects the 31-year-old to command $33.1 million annually with his next contract. That is a huge financial commitment and the Vikings will have to be sure Cousins is the man to take them forward if they are to dish out that sort of money once again.
There is no quality backup currently slated for the roster, which is something Minnesota will have to address either in free agency or the NFL Draft this year. Sean Mannion is a free agent and it remains to be seen whether he is brought back on the cheap for next season.
A short-term deal for a veteran is also a realistic option even if the Vikings draft someone like Jalen Hurts. Minnesota is in win-now mode during a closing window and Mike Zimmer will not want to gamble their chances on a rookie if Cousins goes down.
