Kicker

There’s no way the Vikings select a kicker in this year’s NFL Draft. The sour sting of Daniel Carlson is still strong on their taste buds and they won’t risk making a rookie their starting kicker for a long, long time.

There is a strong chance the kicker for Minnesota is someone new next season. Dan Bailey had a great year in 2019 and he could demand more money on the free-agent market than the Vikings can afford. If he decides to pursue that money, Minnesota will be looking for a cheap, but reliable, option in free agency this offseason.

The Vikings are coming off a 10-6 season and they should be competitive once again in 2020. They should find themselves in a lot of close games and they will want a reliable, veteran kicker on their roster. Minnesota isn’t going to rely on a rookie to make clutch kicks after watching Carlson cost them a game by missing three field goals in a tie with the rival Green Bay Packers in 2018.

Another reason the Vikings won’t be drafting a kicker is that this year’s group of prospects if pretty weak. There isn’t that one kicker who has a big booming leg that was ultra-accurate in school and is considered a can’t miss prospect.

Minnesota will be staying far away from the kickers in this year’s draft, and if they are able to re=sign Bailey or land a similarly skilled kicker in free agency, that will seal the deal.
