3. Wide Receiver

The Vikings are in desperate need to improve the depth behind the star wide receiver duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.

The tandem is still arguably the best in the NFL, but one or two more pieces will be required to give quarterback Kirk Cousins more options in 2020. It would also provide a much-needed cover if either Thielen or Diggs goes down with an injury next season.

Things were so bad for Minnesota’s depth last season that they brought back former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell into the fold. Although he showed glimpses of potential, his overall contribution to the Vikings during his tenure has been extremely disappointing and it would be best to cut ties this year.

There are plenty of intriguing options available in free agency at wide receiver this offseason. One would think Minnesota is also going to look at a developmental prospect in the NFL Draft to learn from Thielen and Diggs.

Bringing someone in on a short-term deal via free agency would be a wise move by the Vikings. Someone who can work the slot and allow Thielen and Diggs to attract considerable attention on the outside could open op the offense even more with the expected progression of second-year tight end Irv Smith.

If Minnesota can strengthen the offensive line with the little funds they have available and bring in a receiver who can contribute right away, a postseason return in 2020 may not be out of the question.
