1. Cornerback
The cornerback situation for the Vikings is a dire one. They could be without three starters from last season and that could decimate this area of their roster.
Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander are heading into free agency and they may not be around by OTAs. Xavier Rhodes is another veteran player that is set to be let go to save Minnesota $8.1 million in cap space following another dismal campaign from the Pro Bowler.
One would think the Vikings would make a move to keep Alexander if they were to choose between the three. He has been cleared to return from injury and he is a slot cornerback specialist who has performed well for Minnesota.
Waynes has been another disappointing first-round selection that has flattered to deceive. If they were to all leave, it would leave the Vikings to rely on the injury-prone Mike Hughes and an unproven corner Holton Hill.
The need to bring in reinforcements and shore up an area of the field where Minnesota was exposed on countless occasions in 2019 is imperative. With the potential departure of safety Anthony Harris, the need for upgrades on the outside of the secondary becomes even more essential.
The Vikings run the risk of putting their chance of success on the line if they do not strengthen their group of corners. This becomes more prevalent in the pass-happy world of today’s NFL.
Minnesota cannot fully rely on their current group of cornerbacks and the situation must be addressed as a top priority in the coming weeks.
