Minnesota’s current secondary situation

Mike Hughes will never have a better chance to make a real name for himself with the Vikings than in 2020.

There is so much uncertainty within the Minnesota secondary it is scary. Stud safety Anthony Harris is a free agent and it remains to be seen whether the Vikings will offer the standout an eight-figure deal to remain with the franchise.

Perennial Pro Bowler Harrison Smith is playing at an elite level, but he is not getting any younger. A long-term replacement will need to be sought sooner rather than later to avoid further complications down the line.

The Minnesota secondary is a mess and it is an area that is going to need a significant upgrade if they want a playoff return next season. The starting duo of Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes is likely to be moved on via release and free agency respectively this year.

Slot corner specialist Mackensie Alexander is another who is set to receive considerable interest from elsewhere in free agency and it remains to be seen whether the Vikings can come up with a financial package to keep him around.

All these signs point to Hughes getting more of a look next season. Any draft pick from this year is going to need time to adjust to the rigors of the league and Minnesota may not be in a position to offer a top-tier free-agent corner big money.

Holton Hill is the only other alternative on the current roster. Although he has had some good moments, there remains serious doubt as to whether he can become a viable starter.
