Cut Reiff or restructure his contract

Before Linval Joseph and Xavier Rhodes were released on Friday, Riley Reiff was frequently included in the discussion of Vikings players who could possibly be a cap casualty this offseason.

Just because Reiff was not among the first to be let go doesn’t mean cutting him still isn’t an option for Minnesota this year though. The Vikings can free up another $8.8 million if they decided to release the veteran left tackle and no one would be surprised if this is what they ended up choosing to do.

Instead of cutting Reiff though, Minnesota could also try and restructure his current deal. If they are able to reduce his current 2020 cap hit ($13.2 million) by at least half, then that would still free up almost $6 million more for them to use this offseason.

The Vikings might still be interested in keeping Reiff around for 2020. But if he doesn’t want to agree to a pay reduction in order to remain with the team, then Minnesota is likely going to just send him on his way and use his money on someone else.
