Sign Cousins to an extension

After his first year with the Vikings, the chances of Kirk Cousins earning another contract with the team certainly took a hit. But with Cousins’ performance in 2019, it’s now a strong possibility he could sign a new deal with Minnesota before the start of next season.

According to ESPN on Saturday, the Vikings and their starting quarterback have already had discussions about a potential extension this year. Nothing has obviously been agreed to, but there seems to at least be interest from both sides to get something done.

When a deal gets done remains the question. If significant progress is able to be made during the next few days with an extension for Cousins, then it’s possible that Minnesota could clear some additional cap space.

The current 2020 cap hit for the Vikings quarterback is $31 million. So if Minnesota can figure out a way to reduce that to around $25 million with an extension, then that would certainly help the team’s ability to improve their roster this offseason.
