What money is Wilson going to command?

The Vikings will be hoping Eric Wilson’s interest in the free-agent market is slim. They do not really have the necessary funds available to get into a bidding war and any big offer could see the player depart for a new team.

Given how little Wilson has made during his NFL career as he worked his way into a position of prominence, it could take a multi-year extension to keep him with the organization. What might be equally as important to the player is finding a team that he can have a real shot at starting going forward.

This is definitely something he has with the Vikings and Wilson showed during the postseason, he is more than capable of contributing in pressure situations. What he lacks in coverage ability, he more than makes up for with energy and commitment and he is a likable character who has the respect of the locker room.

The Vikings face plenty of crucial business decisions over the next few weeks that will indicate what sort of direction they are planning to go in. Losing a young, progressive player like Wilson would represent a blow to an organization that has ambitions to build around younger talent going forward.

Minnesota does not have much to work with from a financial perspective and offering Wilson somewhere in the region of $8 million over a three-year deal may not be enough to convince the player to stay on.
