Combination No. 1

  • Andrew Thomas – OT (Georgia)

  • Denzel Mims – WR (Baylor)

The only downside of the Vikings acquiring the 22nd pick is that it is so close to the 25th. A lot of the same prospects will be considered, but it will still give Minnesota a better shot at landing a guy who could end up falling down the board and that guy could be Andrew Thomas.

Through no fault of his own, Thomas could be the fourth offensive tackle taken in the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s a ready-made plug-and-play left tackle who will be itching to get on the field from day one.

He’s great in both pass and run blocking and he is one of the safer picks in the entire draft. He just doesn’t have the crazy upside of someone like Mekhi Becton or the elite athletic ability of someone like Tristan Wirfs and these guys have passed him on a lot of mock draft boards.

If Thomas falls to pick No. 22, the Vikings should waste little time getting the card in and then they should immediately give Riley Reiff a call and notify him of his release.

At pick No. 25, the Vikings could look to give Adam Thielen a brand new best friend in the receiving corps. Denzel Mims is a guy who has been making the most out of the 2020 draft season.

He first wowed at the Senior Bowl, looking like one of the five best players in Mobile. He then had a lights-out workout at the NFL Scouting Combine, demonstrating his rare blend of size (6-foot-3, 207 pounds) and speed (4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash), shooting himself way up teams’ draft boards.

Mims can catch anything thrown remotely close to him. He would give the Vikings an immediate red zone threat and while his route running needs work, it’s not hard to envision him being very productive as a rookie.

Mims should go in the late first to the early second round and Minnesota would be wise to take him in as their new No. 2 wide receiver.
